Students pursuing the B.S.Ed. in Music Education (120 cr.) are involved in an exciting, dynamic curriculum that leads to Pennsylvania certification K-12 Instrumental and vocal. The coursework and training students receive at Clarion allow them upon graduation to compete confidently for any music teaching position available. Also, because of our high academic standards for certification in Music Education in Pennsylvania, our graduates can readily transfer their certification to most other states to compete for teaching positions across the U.S.
Our students get a first-hand look at music teaching by observing practicing teachers in the classroom, then get "hands on" by tackling the teaching themselves in a variety of pre-service teaching opportunities. These experiences lead toward a culminating cooperative learning experience as students are placed in the classrooms of outstanding area music educators to complete their student teaching practicum.
Professional workshops, conferences, and clinics help to round out students' professional experiences. Giving insight to the best practices in music education, participation in these extracurricular activities not only better prepares our students for careers as music educators, but also facilitates their growth as lifelong learners.
A performance audition is required to be admitted into the Music Education program. Students may audition on any standard band or orchestral instrument, voice, or piano (sorry – no guitar or organ). Visit the Music Admission page for more information on the audition.
