Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society in History, Chi Gamma Chapter
The History Club of Clarion University

The Chi Gamma chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and the History Club are the two university-sanctioned organizations on the Clarion University campus that promote history-related activities among the student body and recognize academic achievement within the discipline. Although distinct in their purpose, both organizations work together closely to plan events, fund-raisers, and social gatherings for their members, many of whom belong to both groups.

Phi Alpha Theta
Phi Alpha Theta is one of the oldest national honor societies in America, founded in 1921 at the University of Arkansas, and is a charter member of the Association of College Honor Societies. The History Club
Founded in 1999, the History Club of Clarion University welcomes all students, faculty, and staff who are interested in history to participate in club activities, regardless of QPA or major discipline. Since its inception, the club has maintained a membership of 35-50 active members every semester. Membership dues are $5 per semester.

The History Club co-sponsors many activities with the Chi Gamma chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, including the social gatherings, movie nights, and day/overnight trips to historic sites. However, the History Club also maintains an identity of its own through its community service and university-wide activities. Specifically, one week following the September 11th terrorist attacks, the club sponsored a car wash which raised over $600 for the United Way fund estbalished to assist the families and widows of firefighters who lost their lives while trying to rescue others.

This academic year, the History Club will once again host the holiday gathering for the History Department faculty and staff, as well as will co-host the university's first academic quiz bowl. In the spring, the club will sponsor a university weekend initiative entitled "Hollywood Goes to War," tracing modern American cinema's renewed fascination with epic war adventures.
