Clarion University–Venango Campus' Department of Applied Technology will host an open house on Thursday, November 18, at 6 p.m., at the Clarion County Career Center to provide information to former employees of Owens-Illinois (O-I) and other interested potential students about an industrial technology associate degree program to be offered in Clarion. The Clarion County Career Center is located at 447 Career Road in Shippenville.
The program will be offered in partnership with Precision Manufacturing Institute (PMI) of Meadville. Students will earn a Clarion University associate of applied science in industrial technology degree with their choice of welding or mechatronics concentrations. General education courses will be offered by Clarion University and technical courses by PMI.
With the help of U.S. Senator Robert Casey, former employees of Owens-Illinois have been certified to receive Trade Act Assistance (TAA), a federal program that is designed to help dislocated workers who have lost their jobs because of foreign competition to prepare for new careers. Funding for former O-I employees will cover full tuition, fees, books, and also offers extended unemployment benefits. Assistance may also be available for displaced workers from other area industries. Anyone seeking benefits to help them fund retraining should contact PA CareerLink® Clarion County at 814-223-1550.
"In these tough economic times, it's important that we're able to go where we're needed to help people get back to work," said Dr. Bill Hallock, chair of the Department of Applied Technology. "People who've lost their jobs at O-I and other industries around the Clarion area can take all of their general education and technical courses in Clarion."
The Department of Applied Technology, located at the Venango Campus, was launched in 2003 in response to a critical need for a highly skilled technical workforce with the educational background to move up the ladder into management positions. Utilizing a unique partnership model, the university partners with licensed, accredited, certified or otherwise approved technical partners to offer an associate of applied science in industrial or administration technology.
The flexible design of the program makes it possible to deliver the program off-site, where it is most needed.
