The Value and Role of Minority Students
Knowing your significance is what makes you valuable. When you know your worth and understand your role within the institution then you become a very valuable asset. Do you realize how much economic power you have? Your mere presence creates an environment that dictates to us the need for a broadened educational perspective. When you realize your uniqueness and utilize it to enlighten those who are uninformed you bestow upon Clarion University a very rich culture that it cannot survive without. You are the "Talented Tenth" that W.E.B. DuBois talked about.
It is really your duty to make sure that the people you are paying are fulfilling their obligation in educating you to the best of their ability. You have to demand a certain degree of accountability in order for you to be successful. I urge you to get your money's worth. Frederick Douglass once said, "Men may not get all they pay for in this world, but they must certainly pay for all they get." This is definitely a fact.
More importantly, your role includes studying hard and working to e the best all-around student you can be throughout you tenure at Clarion University. You have to be both independent and interdependent to be successful in your endeavors, because everybody needs somebody. It's a must that there is unity among your brothers and sisters. But there's also a need to work collectively with fellow students of the majority race. Remember, always strive to be a critical thinker and not a crippled memorizer. Now is the time to act. Recognize your worth, understand you position and perform your part.
