Clarion University-Venango Campus alumnus Derek Charles Weaver successfully completed the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and graduated in the 132nd State Police Cadet Class in October. Of more than 500 prospective cadets who started the academy, Weaver was one of 90 who graduated.
A graduate of North Clarion High School, Weaver earned his associate degree in criminal justice in 2009. He is a son of Mark and Yvonne Weaver of Clarion.
"Derek was one of my best and brightest students to have graduated any cohort of our criminal justice program since I have been employed with the university," said Dr. Paul "PK" Klenowski, assistant professor and director of the criminal justice program. "To my knowledge, Derek is the first Clarion University criminal justice student to successfully navigate and complete the entire Pennsylvania State Police process and actually be offered conditional employment."
Weaver has been assigned to Troop F in Potter County.
His younger brother, Zach, is currently enrolled in Clarion University's criminal justice program at Venango Campus.
"Zach wants to follow in his big brother's footsteps by joining the ranks of the Pennsylvania State Police, and there is no doubt in my mind he will accomplish this goal with flying colors," Klenowski said.
Seven current and past Clarion criminal justice students will take the next state police entrance exam in January 2012. Six other graduates of the criminal justice associate degree program are going through the various stages of hire for such police departments as West Virginia State Police, Ohio Highway Patrol, and Pittsburgh and Wilkinsburg departments.
