Clarion University is an institutional member of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). NIRSA is recognized internationally as the leader for recreation in higher education and an advocate for the advancement of recreation, sport, and wellness. The organization provides educational and developmental opportunities, generates and shares knowledge, and promotes networking and growth for its member.
The state branch of NIRSA is the Pennsylvania Intramural Recreational Sports Association (PIRSA). PIRSA's purpose is to promote and enhance the quality of recreational sports programs in various settings throughout the state by means of professional meetings, publications, dissemination of ideas, and maintenance of policies consistent with the philosophy of NIRSA.
Clarion University's Recreation Staff
Clarion University's recreation professionals are members of NIRSA and PIRSA. Lori Sabatose, Manager of the Student Recreation Center, has been very involved in both the national and state organizations. She has attended conferences and workshops, hosted state workshops, served on committees, and made professional presentations. Lori has won the NIRSA and USTA Tennis Award in 2008 for outstanding commitment to tennis and growth on campus. She currently serves as the PIRSA president.
In addition to the professional staff, formers student workers from the Student Recreation Center have won service awards and the PIRSA Bill Swan award which is given annually to a Pennsylvania student dedicated to recreational sports.
