B.S. Biology

A Bachelor of Science in biology affords students several long-term career goals. Four concentrations are offered including biology, environmental biology, medical technology, and molecular biology/biotechnology. The major requirements for all degrees are similar in the first two years, allowing students to switch between degree options and to readjust career objectives. All degrees are designed to prepare the student for success in the job market or pursuing advanced studies. The biology programs also prepare students for a variety of health careers including pre-medical, pre-veterinary, prechiropractic and pre-dental. The necessary training to pursue other careers in the health sciences is also available through the pre-professional programs. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

B.S. Biology: Ecology/Evolutionary Biology Concentration

Clarion University's program in ecology and evolutionary biology is a multidisciplinary program of study leading to a B.S. in biology with a concentration in ecology and evolutionary biology. By their very nature, ecology and evolutionary biology are subjects that cut across the lines of traditional biology curricula. The ecology and evolutionary biology program is designed to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of these fields and other biological sciences such as genetics, physiology and molecular biology. The primary goal of the EEB program is to prepare students for advanced, graduate-level studies in organismal biology. We strive to develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills that form the foundation for graduate studies in ecology and evolution. Our undergraduates have opportunities to become involved in collaborative faculty-student research, and the results of these projects are regularly presented at scientific meetings and published in scientific journals. Clarion graduates have been successful in ecology and evolutionary biology programs at both the master's and doctoral level. Our graduates currently work in academia, private industry, and for local, state, and federal governments. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

B.S. Molecular Biology/Biotechnology

The Bachelor of Science in biology with a concentration in molecular biology and biotechnology concentration at Clarion University is a unique college degree, designed in collaboration with graduate school programs in molecular biology and the biotechnology industry. This degree, prepares students for one of the most important career fields in modern biology (it was recently rated as one of the "hot" careers by U.S. News & World Report), and reflects the fact that Clarion is a first-rate, comprehensive university. The molecular biology/biotechnology major is a thorough academic degree program. Students gain practical experience through hands-on work in the laboratories which accompany all courses, as well as an in-depth theoretical understanding from classroom discussion. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Minor in Evolutionary Biology

This minor is designed for students who are in other majors but require a general knowledge of the fundamental concepts of biology, but with a focus on ecology/evolutionary biology aspects. These students will be provided with additional skills and experience to enhance their education. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Requirements

Minor in Molecular and Cellular Biology

This minor provides students in chemistry, physics, pre-engineering and computer science a working knowledge of biology at all levels but with an emphasis on cellular and molecular biology. This cross-disciplinary experience allows them to apply the expertise of their major to the emerging fields on nanotechnology, biotechnology, genetic engineering, genomics, computational biology, and others. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
