Transferring Courses from Another Institution

PennWest Clarion will accept transfer courses (except remedial / developmental) from Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools or equivalent that are a grade of C- or better. Clarion does not typically accept transfer work from differently accredited institutions. Course work in cases that are deemed to be related to this policy will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. College level transfer courses with a grade of D or better are transferrable if the student is transferring with a completed AA, AS, or AAS degree with a cumulative 2.0 or better from one of the PA Community Colleges or when the student is transferring with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better with 12 or more transferable credits from another PASSHE institution. Veterans with Joint Service Transcripts or transcripts from their services’ community college will receive full credit for credit value as recommended by the accrediting body. A minimum of 30 of the last 60 credits required for graduation with a baccalaureate degree must be earned through PennWest Clarion. Effective with the Fall 2009 semester, students must also complete 50% of major credits through PennWest Clarion.

Students should complete the transfer approval request form.

Transfer Credit Appeal

Students who feel the need to appeal a course equivalency on the degree audit may do so by meeting with the dean of their college. Students who appeal an equivalency are asked to provide a course syllabus which provides more detailed information than catalog descriptions. The course is then re-evaluated by the appropriate academic department.

Transfer Course Equivalencies

How can you find out if your courses will transfer? Check out the Transfer and Articulation Center on PA TRAC to see a comprehensive list of courses and how they transfer to Clarion. You can also view the same course equivalencies on the Transfer Course Equivalency Guide.

Study Abroad

Study abroad programs offer students the opportunity to maintain enrollment at Clarion while attending an international university. The Office of International Programs coordinates and administers study abroad and exchange programs. Courses taken at another international university should be approved using the transfer approval request form before going abroad.

I am a student at another PA State System School looking to take a course at PennWest Clarion.

If you are a student at another PA State System School and you would like to take a course at Clarion, you have a couple of options:

  1. Get admitted as a Quick Admit student through the Admissions Office. You are permitted to take up to 12 credits as a quick admit without filling out an admissions application.
♦   Course credits would transfer back to your home institution in accordance with their transfer policy.

Note: As a quick admit/transient student, you will need to check with your home institution on rules related to their transfer policy. Most likely, credits will transfer but grades will not factor into your grade point average.

  2. Register for the class through the PA State System Visiting Student program (please refer to the visiting student policy).
♦   Complete the Application for Visiting Student Status and return to Clarion.
♦   Once the approved and signed form gets to Clarion, you will be registered through the Registrar's Office

  3. If we have a course sharing agreement with a State System school, the student would complete the
Distance Education Application obtain signatures, and the form is routed per the instructions.
♦   Registrar's Office registers the student and communicates with the home institution.

Note: The Distance Education option is only valid if the institution has a course sharing agreement set up with another State System school. In this case, the course credits and the grade will count in your grade point average.
