Pittsburgh SiteThe Pittsburgh Site offers 30 college level credits in courses required in West Penn's School of Nursing two-year Diploma Program. While West Penn nursing students are working toward their diploma in nursing, they have an opportunity to concurrently earn an Associate of Science Degree in Allied Health or the Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Clarion University by completing their general education courses work through Clarion University.

Purpose

  • To provide 10 general education courses (30 credits) for WPHSON Diploma requirements. These courses include Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Microbiology, Nutrition, Writing, Logic, Ethics, Psychology and Sociology.
  • To provide a stepping stone for WPHSON graduates to easily transition into Clarion University's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) Program which is fully available online.

Clarion's Registrar's Office classifies WPHSON students as either allied health degree majors or non-degree majors. Student may choose either option.Hospital setting

Option No. 1: Non-degree Registration - Recommended for students who are transferring in six or more credits from other universities.  Beginning nursing students at WPHSON may choose to register under the non-degree option at Clarion University. This indicates that they are taking needed Clarion courses to fulfill their requirements to WPHSON's program and will graduate with a Diploma from WPHSON and a number of credits from Clarion.

Option No. 2: Associate of Science degree in Allied Health Registration - New students at WPHSON may register for an Associate of Science Degree in Allied Health. Sixty credits are required to earn this degree. Clarion grants 30 credits upon successful completion of the WPHSON's nursing classes plus 30 credits for the 10 Clarion courses completed as requirements for WPHSON.

This option is highly recommended for students who are not transferring in any credits from other universities as they will be earning the 60 credits in their time at WPHSON.

Students who are only transferring in 3 credits (one course) are also advised to select this option because upon graduation from WPHSON, they will have earned 57 credits and will only need one more clarion course (3 credits) to earn their A.S.

Advanced Degrees in Nursing Programs

The ASAH degree program provides a stepping stone for WPHSON graduates to easily transition into Clarion University's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) program available fully online. Nurses can further advance their professional careers by obtaining a Master of Science in Nursing degree at the Pittsburgh Site through Clarion University's collaborative program with Edinboro University.

How do classes that I have taken apply to a Clarion degree?

What if scenarios...

  • What if. . . . I am right out of high school and have no college credits?

You may conveniently take all the general education courses required for the WPHSON program at the Pittsburgh Site of Clarion University. The Pittsburgh Site of Clarion University is located at the WPHSON building. By taking all of the general education courses required for the WPHSON program at the Pittsburgh Site of Clarion University and by completing the WPHSON program, you will have earned Clarion University's Associate of Science degree in Allied Health. And, you will be only 58 credits away from Clarion University's RN-BSN. You will find Clarion University's BSN to be very cost-effective when compared to other BSN programs, and all Clarion BSN courses are conveniently offered online.

  • What if. . . . I have taken courses at another college or university? Will they transfer into Clarion University and help me earn the ASAH degree or BSN degree?

Yes, courses earned at other properly accredited colleges or universities will transfer into Clarion in accordance with Clarion University's transfer policy. If the courses tha you transfer in are courses required for the WPHSON program, then they will apply toward Clarion's ASAH degree. But there are things you need to know about transferring in credits: To earn Clarion's ASAH degree, you must earn a minimum of 30 credits from Clarion University. This does not include transfer credits or WPHSON nursing courses. If you are in this situation, you may take online courses at Clarion that will simultaneously help you meet the minimum 30 credits for the ASAH degree and that will also apply toward the BSN degree. You may take these while you are completing the WPHSON program. So, while you are completing the WPHSON program you will also be earning credits toward your Clarion University Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing.

  • What if. . . . I want to get a head start on some of my general education courses before I start at WPHSON?

You may complete general education courses at Clarion prior to starting the West Penn program. These courses may be taken at the Pittsburgh Site of Clarion University that is located at the WPHSON building. Or, you may take classes online or at Venango College of Clarion University located in Oil City. Clarion University has course offerings in the fall and spring semesters, as well as during summer. This way, you will already have earned credits toward Clarion University's ASAH degree that will also apply toward Clarion University's BSN degree. Each student's situation may be unique. We will be happy to discuss your specific needs and help you to determine a plan that will lead to a degree from Clarion University.
