Alternative Fuel Solutions of Pennsylvania LLC owners John Rensel and Dennis O’ Donnell

For business owners John Rensel and Dennis O’ Donnell, the automobile industry has always been a key interest. Even at a young age, John recalls sitting behind the wheel of a car pretending to drive. He has spent the majority of his life working with automobiles, starting in his late teens working at a gas station. He was even part of the race car industry in the late 1960s, building and driving his own race car. Economic turns and opportunities have led him to many different areas in the industry, including mechanic jobs and dealership positions. Similarly, Dennis has not only had extensive education of the auto industry - majoring in Alternative Fuels and Automotive Technology – but he has years of workplace experience too. The study of alternative fuels has always interested him because he believes that we are entering an era where our country’s dependence on foreign oil needs to decrease.

Mr. Rensel’s and Mr. O’ Donnell’s philosophy and background have created their current success in Alternative Fuel Solutions of Pennsylvania, LLC (AFS). AFS opened its doors on August 23, 2010, offering compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel conversion services for vehicles and equipment, along with a variety of automotive repair and maintenance services. Compressed natural gas provides the cleanest burning fuel available, producing the fewest emissions of any motor fuel and significantly less pollutants than gasoline.

After attending a First Step Seminar in October 2009 on business start-up steps and strategies, John Rensel and Dennis O’Donnell met with the Clarion University Small Business Development Center in March of 2010 with the goal of creating a business plan for Alternative Fuel Solutions of Pennsylvania. Mr. Rensel worked diligently with his SBDC business consultant, Corry Riley, to develop a plan and financial projections that was used to successfully secure the funding needed to start the business. Mr. Rensel was very pleased with the assistance provided by the SBDC and comments, “Corry was very responsive to changes, answering questions, and keeping communication ongoing.”
