Professional Writing Certificate

The Certificate in Professional Writing is a 12-credit program that builds on skills and dispositions learned during first-year writing and shows students how to apply them to the kinds of writing practiced in professional settings. The ability to write well is among the most important “soft skills” job candidates can have. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, as of 2017, 74 percent of employers seek candidates with strong writing skills. In addition to enhancing any candidate’s resume, the English program’s certificate prepares students from across the university for the evolving writing tasks they will encounter in professional environments. Further, students will learn how to use digital tools, successfully convey discipline-specific information, collaborate in teams, and how to assess the needs of diverse readers and communicate effectively with them. Note: This certificate teaches genres, forms, and skills of writing. Students might rely on previously acquired discipline-specific knowledge for content, but writing certificate courses do not teach discipline-specific knowledge. This certificate is offered online and at the Clarion campus.
