All services provided by the Keeling Health Center are strictly confidential. The Keeling Health Center complies HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
The Keeling Health Center cannot release information to anyone without the written consent of the person to whom the information pertains. Information will not be released to the parents, guardians, spouse, friends, etc., of a student without written authorization by the student.
While the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education has determined that the universities' health centers do not fall under the HIPAA guidelines, the Keeling Health Center is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliant. This federal regulation assumes that all "individually identifiable medical information" will only be released upon written permission of the individual person.
This policy exists to assure that students do not hesitate to use the health services out of fear that their personal information will be shared with anyone else. Health care is a private matter.
Students are encouraged to involve persons whom they perceive as supportive in their treatment and care. However, this is an individual decision for the student to make. Health center staff will not make this decision for the student.
