Athletic Scholarships

E. James & Patricia M. Kelley Honors/Athletic Scholarship:  This scholarship was established by Pat Kelley in loving memory of her husband, James Kelley, Class of 1950, who passed away in 2010.  Jim received his undergraduate degree at Clarion State College where he played both basketball and baseball.  His love of academics and sports led to the creation of this combined scholarship for the Honors Program and Athletics.  Eligibility Requirements:  Honors Program student that either plays basketball or baseball.  The scholarship will be awarded by the Director of the Honors Program.  If there is not an eligible student from basketball or baseball, then the award will be presented to any Honors student playing a recognized sport.


Alpha Gamma Phi Scholarship
This scholarship established by the brothers of Alpha Gamma Phi fraternity. It is awarded to an incoming freshman student-athlete. Recipient must have a minimum SAT score of 900, be ranked in the upper two-fifths of his/her graduating class, have financial need, and meet the eligibility requirements of the NCAA. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Alumni Association Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship endowment was created by the Clarion University Alumni Association with proceeds from the annual "Spring for Scholars" auction. These scholarships are available to Clarion University athletes who meet the NCAA eligibility requirements.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Dr. Helen M. Barton Women's Basketball Endowment
This scholarship established by Mary L. Seifert, Class of 1946, in memory of former physical education teacher Helen Barton. Scholarship is for a female freshman student athlete. First preference is given to a female basketball player. Athlete must also meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Burns and Burns Golf Scholarship
This scholarship established to provide support to outstanding student-athletes participating in the golf program.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

John V. Calipari Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship created by John V. Calipari, Clarion Class of 1982, and supported by his former Clarion teammates. Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Clarion University Men's Basketball player. Athlete must also meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered by the basketball coaching staff.

Louis & Beatrice Dean Family Athletic Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship was established by Louis, Class of 1974, and Beatrice Dean to demonstrate their desire to support Clarion University student athletes. The scholarship will be available to both men and women who participate in any of Clarion's NCAA sports. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

"Dare to Dream" Scholarship
Established through the efforts of the Clarion University Alumni Committee, whose mission it is to unite Clarion Football alumni and friends to participate in alumni events for the purpose of preserving our proud football tradition, and generating funds for scholarship assistance to talented undergraduate student athletes. Eligibility standard is a Clarion University football player who meets the NCAA eligibility requirements and selection is at the discretion of the football staff.

George B. Garbarino Scholarship
An endowed scholarship created via proceeds from the university's annual Wild Game dinner along with gifts from friends of Mr. Garbarino. This athletic scholarship administered by the athletic director. Scholarships are available to both men and women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Johnny Garneau "Golden Spike" Volleyball Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Chuck, Class of 1972 and Jane, Class of 1973, McLaughlin in honor of Jane's father, Johnny Garneau.  During the time he lived in Clarion, Johnny was renowned for his "Johnny Garneaus" restaurants in the Clarion County community and in Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Cleveland, and southern Florida and was one of the founding fathers of the local Autumn Leaf Festival.  This scholarship also recognized the athletic accomplishments of his grandchildren, Megan, CJ, and Kayley McLaughlin.  Eligibility criteria considered by Clarion's volleyball coach includes an incoming freshman volleyball player; a player who meets the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA; and preference will be given to a business major with a gpa of a 3.2 or above in high school.

Golden Eagle Scholarship Endowment
Scholarships are available to both men and women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion. Interested students should have their high school coach contact the respective coach at Clarion for additional information. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

P.J. Hilbert Women's Tennis Scholarship
This scholarship was established by P.J. (Magaro) Hilbert, Class of 1977.  She was instrumental in helping to establish the women's tennis program and was a player on the original team.  In 2005, P.J. was recognized by the Clarion University Alumni Association as Distinguished Alumnus for her professional and personal achievements since graduation.  The Clarion University tennis coach will determine the Hilbert Scholarship winner each year.

Al & Karen Jacks Football Scholarship
This scholarship established to honor Coach Al Jacks and his late wife, Karen, for their unselfish contributions to the football and athletic programs at Clarion for more than twenty years. Candidate must be a Clarion University football player who meets the NCAA eligibility requirements.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Ernest W. Johnson Memorial Baseball Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a member of the Clarion University baseball team who is a resident of Pennsylvania. In addition, the individual must have completed at least three academic semesters, be in good academic standing, and be eligible for participation in NCAA events the following year.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Joe Kata, Class of 32, Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship established by Verna Kata, Class of 32, in memory of her husband Joe who was a former three-sport athlete and local high school football coach, as well as a guidance counselor and superintendent. The award will be given to a male or female freshman student athlete who meets eligibility requirements set by the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Pat Kiehl Diving Scholarship
Established by Mr. Pat Kiehl, Clarion Class of 1972. Pat was a member of the first swimming team at Clarion - only two divers in 1968. He was the first captain of the team, Clarion's first national champion, All-American, and MVP. Pat was a former professional high diver and won the Masters National Age Group Diving Championship. Pat came from humble beginnings and diving at Clarion was Pat's ticket out and led to his great success in business. To be considered for the scholarship, candidate must be a Clarion male or female diver. They must also meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Student athletes will automatically be considered.

Joseph J. Knowles Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established to financially assist men and women student athletes. Two awards (one man and one woman) are presented each year.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Lefevre Family Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship was created by Al Lefevre, Class of 1965 & 1971, and his wife Bonnie (Elizabeth J. Harkness), Class of 1965, in honor of their family and their life-long relationship with Clarion.  Bonnie earned her degree in Elementary Education and has taught kindergarten for 27 years, and is an avid golfer.  Al played quarterback for the Golden Eagles while earning his degree in speech pathology and served as a speech therapist from 1965-1999.  Al also coached 70 different teams (golf, basketball, football, volleyball) at the high school level and returned to Clarion University in 1999 as head golf coach.  His university teams were extraordinarily successful and Al was named PSAC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2006.  Al lost his battle with brain cancer August 2008.  A Lefevre Family Scholarship award will be presented annually to a member of the Clarion University golf team, as determined by the coach. 

Clarence and Janet Lesser Scholarships
The Lesser Trust Fund provides scholarships to successful students in the areas of theatre, art, music, and athletics. High school students who have exhibited high interest and achievement in these areas are urged to apply. Application for consideration needs to be submitted prior to April 1. Selection is based upon talent, academic promise, and leadership potential. Awards may be continued in subsequent years at the discretion of the selection committee, subject to the availability of funds. James A. "Abby" Mays Scholarship
This scholarship established by Carloyn Mays Axtell in memory of her father, a leader in the development of Clarion County. The purpose of the award is to assist student-athletes enrolled in the College of Business Administration who meet eligibility requirements for either football or men's basketball.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Dave Mercinko Memorial Scholarship
Established by Michael, Class of 1979, and Courtney Baker in memory of Dave Mercinko, a former Clarion University football player. This scholarship will be an annual award for a freshman Clarion University student athlete. To be considered one must have a minimum SAT score of 900 or above, graduate in the top two-fifths of high school class, and demonstrate financial need.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

William G. Miller Swimming/Diving Scholarship
This scholarship established to honor Bill Miller who was the Head Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving Coach at Clarion University from 1979-2000. After 22 years as the men's swimming coach, he finished with a duel record of 154-38, and after 13 years s the women's swimming coach, he finished with a duel record of 90-20. Eligible candidates must be a member of the Clarion University Swimming/Diving Team and meet the NCAA eligibility requirements.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

The Moffatt Family Wrestling Scholarship
This scholarship was established by James (Jim) and Marilyn (Mim) Moffatt '70 to enhance and promote the Clarion University wrestling program and its student-athletes.  They established the scholarship as a tribute to all the friends they had in the wrestling program during their time at Clarion University.  Candidates must meet the established requirements of the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student-athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Pat Mooney Cross Country/Track & Field Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends, former student-athletes, and family of Coach Pat Mooney, a highly regarded member of the Clarion University Coaching Staff for more that 10 years.  Eligibility criteria considered by the current coach is as follows:  a current member of the cross country or track & field team; a member of the team entering their final season of competition in either sport; (juniors could be considered if no seniors meet criteria) a non-athletic scholarship member of the team; and the individual must have contributed over the years to the well being of the team and university.

The Dean James D. Moore Women's Softball Scholarship
This scholarship was established by David C. Smith, Class of 1964, to honor Dean James Moore who was a former dean at Clarion State College. First preference will be given to a student/ softball player pursuing a degree in the College of Education & Human Services. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Mark Nanz Memorial Endowment
Established by Chuck Nanz, the former head swimming coach at Clarion University and father of Marz Nanz. Chuck started the swimming program when the natatorium was first opened in the late 1960's. His team placed second in the conference its first year and was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion the next seven years in a row. The Nanz family lost their beloved son, Mark, three days prior to his 30th birthday in a tragic accident that occurred while he was returning to Pennsylvania for a reunion with former swimming teammates for Clarion. The scholarship is presented each year by the head coach to a male Clarion University swimmer.

Dr. Max Nemmer Women's Tennis Scholarship
This scholarship was established by David C. Smith '64 to honor Dr. Max Nemmer who was a respected and admired professor of Mr. Smith while at Clarion State Teachers College. Dr. Nemmer came to Clarion State in the fall of 1960 where he taught English and was an esteemed colleague and admired educator. Eligible candidates must meet admission's requirements for enrollment and plan matriculation to Clarion University and must meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. First preference will be given to a student from the College of Education and Human Services.

Richard L. & Mary Lou Pae Football Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends, former players, and family in honor of Dick Pae. "Coach Pae" was a member of the Clarion University Health & Physical Education faculty for nearly 30 years and is remembered as a highly regarded teacher, a dedicated coach, a great mentor, and an outstanding influence on Clarion's proud tradition in athletics. Mary Lou, along with Karen Jacks, started the End Zone T-Shirt stand in the late 1970's to provide funds for gifts for graduating seniors. As assistant dean in the College of Business, Mary Lou guided many students toward earning their degrees. The head football coach will award this scholarship to a junior football player who will advance to senior status and has demonstrated excellence on the field and in his studies. Special consideration is given to defensive players majoring in business.

Potter-McClune Scholarship
This scholarship endowment was established by Mr. Clifford R. McClune and his wife Maralouise, in honor of his parents, Blance Irene Potter and Russell R. McClune; and grandparents. The scholarship was created to support of student athletes from either Clarion County high schools (preference to students from Clarion Area or Clarion-Limestone High School) who demonstrate financial need. (Second preference the remaining Clarion County schools) Recipients are eligible to receive the award in subsequent years, provided that they remain in good academic standing (3.0 or higher).  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Diane L. Reinhard Soccer Scholarship
Established by Mr. David C. Smith, Class of 1964 to honor Dr. Diane L. Reinhard who was highly regarded as a dedicated university administrator, mentor, and outstanding visionary during her 13 years (1990-2003) as President of Clarion University.  To be considered by the soccer coach, candidates must be a player who meets the eligibility requirement set by NCAA, and first preference will be given to a student from the College of Education & Human Services.

Dr. Rebecca Rutt Leas Women's Swimming Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Dr. Rebecca Leas (former coach) and Milissa (Steiner) Bauer '84, a former Clarion swimmer and Clarion University graduate.  Dr. Leas was the head women's swimming coach from 1979-1987, leading Clarion to six Division II national team titles and a second and a third place finish.  Her teams were undefeated in PSAC dual meets and won every PSAC championship for eight straight years.  Clarion defeated many D-1 schools and also competed at the Division I national championships 1982-86 and the 1984 United States Olympic Trials.  During Dr. Lea's tenure, the women also excelled in the classroom. This scholarship is awarded to a woman who demonstrates this continued spirit of excellence both in the water and in the classroom. This scholarship is awarded an undergraduate who meets NCAA Div II regulations and must maintain at least a 2.8 QPA while swimming at Clarion University.

Fran Shope Scholarship
A scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior woman who has made outstanding contributions to Clarion University athletics.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

W. S. Tippin Scholarships
Scholarships are available to both men and women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion. Interested students should have their high school coach contact the respective coach at Clarion for additional information.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Weir Family Scholarship
Established by Chuck Weir, Class of 1956, a former Clarion University athlete, and Shirley Weir, in honor of the Weir family that includes many children and grandchildren, some of who have graduated from Clarion University. This scholarship will be awarded to a freshman student-athlete who meets the eligibility criteria set by NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

George W. Williams/ Robert Bubb Wrestling Scholarship
This scholarship established by Mrs. Nancy Williams in memory of her husband, the voice of Clarion wrestling for many years. The award is made annually to a member of the university's wrestling team or a graduate student associated with the program. The recipient will be selected based upon the following requirements: academic proficiency, wrestling performance, character, moral standards, and eligibility under NCAA rules.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Dr. George F. and Twila M. Wollaston Scholarship
This endowed scholarship funded by the Wollastons (George '57 and Twila M. '58) as a means of attracting outstanding young men and women in academics and athletics to Clarion. Two freshman scholarships are awarded each year, one to a member of the men's baseball team and one to a member of the women's basketball team.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.
