B.A. Art

The Bachelor of Arts is a liberal arts degree and is designed for those interested in studying art, but with a more substantial general education component than offered in the pre-professional B.F.A. The program requires a year of foundation studies, plus upper-level studio and art history courses. Progress reviews throughout culminate in a required exhibition or portfolio review. This degree has a language requirement. Free electives in this degree offer the opportunity to pursue a minor from offerings across the university. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

B.F.A. Art

The Bachelor of Fine Arts is a pre-professional degree intended for those interested in a career as an art professional. In a culture where visual communication is increasingly important, those who are well versed in art, art theory, visual culture and design are in demand. The program requires a year of foundation studies, and upper-level studio art and art history credits totaling 72. The student will work toward proficiency in a medium, or may chose to explore a range of traditional or contemporary disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, installation art, digital media, electronics in art. The remaining credits are made up of general education electives. This intensive program prepares the student for a career working as an artist, educator, museum or gallery employee, or to continue graduate studies in art. The Clarion University Art Department boasts a diverse collection of faculty with a broad range of backgrounds and interests. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

B.F.A. Art: Graphic Design Concentration

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in graphic design is geared toward students wishing to become professional graphic designers. Adding the minor in Web development will expand potential opportunities to include jobs in design for the Web. The majority of the credits of this program are comprised of art and art history courses; almost all upper-level courses are in graphic design, illustration or digital art and design programming. A year of foundation courses, progress reviews and a senior portfolio are required. The remaining credits are comprised of general education courses. Students are prepared to enter the work force in entry-level design jobs, as the B.F.A. is the preferred degree for design professionals. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Minor in Art

Art minors learn visual literacy in both the required foundation courses and subsequent studio electives. A minor in art enhances problem solving ability, and creative thinking, skills that enhance success in any profession. The minor culminates in a capstone exhibition. The art minor requires 21 credits in art coursework. This minor is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Minor in Art History

Minors in art history learn about art, history and visual culture across the world. Art history minors might be seeking to learn more about art in order to start a collection, improve visual literacy or broaden understanding of the world and its possibilities. The requirement for an art history minor is 18 credits of art and art history coursework. This minor is offered only at the Clarion campus.
