B.S. Environmental Geoscience

Have you ever wondered why and how natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, drought, floods, landslides or tsunamis, occur? Or how humanity deals with the aftermath of such phenomenon? Have you ever wondered about the sustainability of the human race as populations continue to increase amid decreasing natural resources? With natural resources dwindling and human populations increasing, the field of geoscience has increased focus on mineral resource exploration and extraction. Utica and Marcellus Shale reserves, oil shale, and safe and effective deep water drilling have recently dominated the media. The environmental geoscience degree program (and also the geology degree program) creates graduates who are well trained to enter such workplace environments. Graduates also are adept at the preservation of ecosystems and the environment. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Minor in Environmental Geoscience

Many people assume that geography consists of memorizing place names on maps. Knowing where cities and natural features are located on the planet is but a tiny component of geography. Instead, geography is defined as the holistic study of the Earth and humans. The discipline seeks to understand the relationships between the physical world and human cultures. As such, a wide array of interrelated topics are explored as the development of individual human culture is highly affected by physical aspects such as climate, terrain, water resources, soils, and historical interactions with other cultures. This minor is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Minor in Geographic Information Science

Geography is increasingly important as technology allows information sharing in an instantaneous fashion. Knowledge of other cultures and their historical development is critical towards eliminating conflict in addition to fostering future collaborations. The geographic information science minor is one means of bridging cultural gaps as this computer system is capable of analyzing huge volumes of physical and human data in a simultaneous manner. This minor is offered only at the Clarion campus.

Certificates And Certifications

Geographic Information Systems Certificate

The certificate in geographic information systems is created to help support the growing need in the market. Completion of the geographic information systems certificate requires 18 credits comprised of two online four credit courses (GEOG 411 and 413), and two online five credit courses (GEOG 412 and 414). The courses progress in information and level of complexity where GEOG 411 discusses the fundamentals of geographic information systems, GEOG 412 presents data manipulation and creation, GEOG 413 presents concepts and applications of map design, and GEOG 414 represent advanced concepts and applications of problem solving approaches and techniques. Upon the completion of all course requirements, students are awarded the geographic information systems certificate. Collectively, the certificate as well as its courses qualify for the eligibility requirements for the professional GIS certification provided by the GIS Certification Institute (www.gisci.org). To be eligible you must have a four-year degree from a regionally accredited college or university. This program is offered only online.
