“Celebrate Global Cultures” theme for international night

Cultural Night PosterClarion University will once again bring international traditions, dance, and food to the Clarion community as part of its annual International Cultural Night with the theme, "Celebrate Global Cultures." The event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Gemmell Student Complex Multi-Purpose Room. Performances will start promptly at 7 p.m. Doors will be closed at 7:15 p.m. The program is sponsored by the Clarion International Association and is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to defray the cost of food preparation.

In addition to performances by students of the Clarion International Association, the Wacongo Dance Company, a traditional ensemble of master drummers, musicians and dancers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, will perform the ancestral songs and dances of Central Africa with music from 400 ethnic groups.

"This program is a way of introducing the campus and community to many cultures," said Linda Heineman, advisor for the Clarion International Association. "The event will feature dances, vocal performances, a fashion parade, and other cultural presentations from the various regions of the world, including Africa, east and south/central Asia, Europe, and the Middle East."

A variety of international foods will be served following the program to allow guests to sample cuisine from around the world.

In addition to Heineman, the 2010-11 Clarion International Association Executive Board includes:

Chao Wu, president. Wu is from China and is majoring in accounting and business economics.
Tumie Mphatse, vice president. Mphatse is from Lesotho and is majoring in industrial relations.
Jingjing Niu, secretary. Niu is from China and is majoring in business economics.
Jingfan Qu, treasurer. Qu is from China and is majoring in accounting.
The Office of International Programs staff includes: Dr. Jocelind Gant, associate vice president for International Programs; Linda Heineman, international student advisor; Lynn Hepfl, ISEP coordinator; and Dr. Ray Feroz, coordinator of International Programming and Study Abroad.

The Clarion International Association seeks to enhance better understanding between the American and international community, while at the same time educating both American students and the community through cultural performances and events from different parts of the world.
