B.S. Communication: Communication Principles Concentration
The concentration in Communication Principles offers the most flexibility of all the Communication concentrations. Students are able to choose from a selection of lower and upper level classes to meet their career goals. Core coursework in written and oral communication, professional experiences and career development curriculum provides students with the common skills needed to succeed in any COM related field. Elective coursework may vary; students may prepare for a career in media writing, social media, media management, speech and human communication or other communication-related fields. This program is offered at the Clarion campus and online.
B.S. Communication: Digital Media Concentration
With the Bachelor of Science in communication, digital media concentration, you will focus on the basics of communication with an emphasis on telling stories through television and other media. Coursework covers television and media production basics, and how to shape narratives for a tech-savvy generation. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
B.S. Communication: Integrated Journalism Concentration
With the Bachelor of Science in communication, integrated journalism concentration, you will prepare for a journalism career in digital media including online newspapers, magazines, and news blogs. Coursework covers principles and practices of reporting and interviewing, news writing, ethics, social media, newspaper design, and media management. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
B.S. Communication: Public Relations/Advertising/Corporate Communication Concentration
With the Bachelor of Science in communication, public relations/advertising/corporate communication concentration, you will learn how to build and manage relationships with key publics, create compelling brand messages, and communicate effectively with stakeholder groups inside and outside of organizations. Coursework covers principles and practices, writing, cases and campaigns, social media, ethics, and leadership in public relations, advertising, and corporate communication settings. B.S. Integrative Studies: Communication Concentration
The Bachelor of Science in integrative studies, communication concentration, provides you with a broad-based foundation in the discipline through courses in mass communication, writing, communication theory, and interpersonal and small-group communication. It is intended for individuals pursuing careers in corporate communication, media management, journalism or other mass media-related fields. This program is offered at the Clarion campus and online.
Minor in Health Communication
The minor in health communication is designed to address how communication impacts all areas of health. Coursework explores the connection between communication and social, physical and mental health, as well as the impact of new media technology in the health care industry. Students will be exposed to health communication courses and have the opportunity to focus on specific communication frameworks in a variety of courses including interpersonal, small group, gender, conflict, non-verbal, electronically mediated, mass media and cross cultural communication. This minor is offered online and at the Clarion campus.
Minor in Social Media
The minor in social media is intended to provide students with skills related to the creation, management and maintenance of social media accounts. Students will explore key areas including writing for digital media, aesthetics, audience analysis, production planning and message design for social media. Elective courses in photography, communication, strategic messaging and design allow students to choose their own focus to best augment their major. This minor is offered online and at the Clarion campus.
Minor in Speech Communication
A minor in speech communication enables you to explore the various skills and practices of communication, such as interpersonal and group discussion. The minor requires students to take 18 credits in communication studies. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
Minor in Sports Media
The sports media minor gives all majors a chance to get in on the action and learn about the media side of the sports industry. With classes in theory and production, this minor explores sports in our global society. Flexible options allow you to learn the why and how behind producing live sports coverage, writing for sport media and promoting different types of sporting events, covering everything from in-venue entertainment to outside contests and events. This 18-credit minor provides options for concentrating in a specific area of sport media, but also provides hands-on experiences to provide the foundation in writing for sport as well as sport media creation and coverage. Theoretical options include coursework relating to sport in society; specifically, sport ethics, gender in sports, sports management and sport facilities and events.
