State Requirements

Current initial certification requirements are as follows:
  1. Completion of an approved teacher education program of study including a supervised student teaching experience in the area of certification.

  2. A Bachelor's Degree awarded in the area of the certificate requested.

  3. A 3.0 overall Grade Point Average (GPA on a 4.0 scale) as noted on Bachelor's or Master's transcript.

What This Means to You

  • If your present quality point average (QPA) is less than a 2.92, you will not earn a minimum 3.0 QPA at the end of this semester EVEN IF you receive straight As in your student teaching placements.
  • If your present QPA is higher than a 2.92, you may still not earn a 3.0 QPA IF you receive less than As in your student teaching placements.
  • You CAN bring up your QPA to the minimum requirement of 3.0 by (1) Holding your graduation until the next semester; (2) Repeat courses in the spring semester in which you received less than a "B" grade.
  • REMEMBER that as your earned credits increase, your QPA must increase proportionately to meet the graduation/certification requirement.  Thus, as you use the QPA Calculator, remember to subtract the number of credits being repeated from the total earned credits before you add them in as courses you are taking as you move through the calculator process.
  • If you have any questions, please contact your supervisor or the director of Field Services in 102 Stevens Hall
